Now here's the trick. We are going to tie these objects to something we know. We can all count. Look at the images on the banner at the top of the page; they all rhyme with the numbers one to ten. Sun - one, Shoe - two, Tree - three, Door - four, Hive - five, Sticks - six, Heaven - seven, Gate - eight, Line - nine and Hen -Ten. Instead of counting one to ten, you could fairly easily count in those images instead, just by thinking of what rhymes with the number. This is something you KNOW. All you do now is to peg what you want to remember - in this case a list of objects - to those images.
Close your eyes and imagine the sun.
This represents number one. Then imagine a
plant, which was
the first object on the list, growing up towards the sun and winding
its way around it. The more unlikely the image you imagine, the more
likely you are to remember it. Number 2 is represented by a shoe and
the object you want to remember is a table. Picture a shoe and add a
table to your picture. Number 3 is a tree so add
a phone to your picture of a tree. Exaggerate your images, make them
big, funny, sexy and add movement and sound. For instance, Number 4 is
door and the object
to remember is flowers.
Picture a slapstick
comedy where the hero is
bringing flowers to his girl, but he gets them slammed in a door and
all the heads are cut off and he is left with the stalks. Five is hive.
Imagine a hive. Try and hear the bees buzzing, smell the honey, taste
its sweetness, feel its stickiness. Then introduce a lamp into the
picture.
To recall your list, begin by thinking of your key number images. When you think of sun for 1, you will find that a picture of a plant also pops into your head. Play with the list. If there is anything you can't remember, just go back to the key number image,. add the object image and make the picture even bigger and brighter and more outrageous. Very shortly you will find that you will easily recall all ten objects from one to ten, backwards and in any random order.
